The Position
Full Time (11.5 PA's) Specialty Doctor in Anaesthesia
General:
The post holder will have a varied weekly clinical programme. This will usually include four daytime clinical sessions per week, which may include elective surgical work, daytime emergency work, obstetric anaesthesia/analgesia, intensive care, and early-evening sessions in obstetrics/emergencies (5:30 – 8:30). The Department’s on-call arrangements are designed to provide dedicated cover for emergency surgery and resuscitation, intensive therapy and obstetrics. Care component of the job plan will cover an average 10 PAs each week with 1.5PA for supporting professional activity. At this hospital we will agree the timetable of work with the speciality doctor including on calls. This will be through the job planning process. All Specialty Doctors will have access to a consultant for advice and where needed support – this is normally the ‘black spot’ consultant during he day and an on call consultant out of hours.
The Specialty Doctor will be encouraged to attend educational and audit sessions within the hospital and department. Full support will be given to promote continuing professional development and medical education. Regular accompanied lists (with a consultant anaesthetist) will be incorporated into the appointee’s programme of work. On appointment it is hoped that particular sub-specialty interests may be accommodated or developed and these will be encouraged. All staff are responsible for complying with Trust Infection Control policies and clinical guidelines. Staff are expected to prepare and actively participate in the Trust’s annual Performance Development Review process and progress reviews, and to ensure training and development needs detailed in their personal development plan are followed up and the effectiveness of the acquired training and development evaluated in terms of self, patient and service. Sessions This post will offer 11.5 Programmed Activities per week. This will consist of 1.5 SPA per week 10 DCC Sessions per Week The current rota will be agreed via your job plan and can include days, long days, nights and weekends.
Health Service
CRITICAL CARE UNIT
The Critical Care Unit is a state-of-the-art ICU/HDU facility encompassing the entire first floor of the Centre. The current bed case is 19, with a mixture of level 3 and level 2 patients, with facilities to ventilate up to 7 patients at any time, with 4 haemofiltration machines. The Unit admits a full range of general medical and surgical cases, some paediatric and obstetric cases. The elective surgical workload includes major spinal, colorectal & gynae oncology. There is an active research programme and the unit supports an expanding Critical Care Outreach service. The Critical Care Unit and the Chronic Pain Relief Service form important parts of the training programme for Specialist Registrars and other junior staff in the Anaesthetic Department.
ACUTE PAIN
A variety of techniques are supported on the general wards with appropriate protocols. In particular, post-operative epidural analgesia and various regional block catheters are managed in the ward setting.
OBSTETRICS AND GYNAECOLOGY
Obstetrics and Gynaecology is housed on the District General Hospital site and includes two theatres for gynaecology. The hospital cares for about 4000 pregnant women per annum, over 40% of who require or request some sort of anaesthetic intervention. The Caesarean section rate averages around 23%. There is a separate delivery floor with 6 labour rooms and a further midwifery led care unit. There is 1 dedicated obstetric operating theatre for the provision of general and local anaesthesia for operative delivery and a further room allocated for obstetric recovery and for complicated non-operative delivery. There is an obstetric anaesthetic rota staffed by trainee and Speciality Doctors as well as consultant obstetric sessions and LSCS lists (3 per week) covered by consultant anaesthetists.
ECT
Anaesthesia for Electro-Convulsive Therapy in the on-site Psychiatric Unit is provided by the Anaesthetic Department.

Essential Criteria
GMC registered with license to practice
Previous NHS experience
Applicants must be fully registered practitioners and shall have completed at least three years’ full-time hospital service in the Core Trainee or higher grade since first obtaining registration, including adequate experience in the specialty or equivalent experience. Possession of FRCA is desirable but not essential.
