The Position
Full Time (10 PA's) Consultant Cellular Pathologist
We are looking for somebody with the ability to report a wide range of general histopathological and cytological material. In addition, the applicant should be prepared to develop special interests and lead at least one of the relevant cancer multidisciplinary team meetings that occur on a weekly basis.
Health Service
Histopathology and non-gynaecological cytopathology requests at the hospital have steadily increased in the last few years (pre-COVID-19) with approximately 19000 surgical cases, 1,500 non-gynaecological cytopathology cases and 350 adult coronial autopsies in 2019.
2020 has been an unprecedented year and, like the rest of the country, cases numbers in all specialities initially dramatically reduced. However, these numbers have begun to rebound back, with many of the hospital services instigating catch up clinics, endoscopy lists and theatre sessions to address the backlog of NHS patients awaiting assessment and treatment. With this in mind the surgical and cytology numbers could be higher than previous years.
There is an interesting range of work in cellular pathology including a high proportion of breast, skin, urological, gynaecological and gastrointestinal specimens, together with pulmonary & head & neck specimens. There is no direct requirement to report gynaecological cytology specimens as there is an off-site screening laboratory. However, this may be negotiated if required. We have close working relationships with Addenbrooke’s Hospital Histopathology Department in Cambridge, where many of our cases are reviewed as part of regional multi-disciplinary team meetings.
