The Position
Full time (10 PA's) Consultant Medical Microbiology/Infectious Diseases
We are a 4 Consultant Microbiology department providing Microbiology and a Clinical Infectious Diseases Service. The post holders will consolidate and help develop the clinical liaison and antimicrobial stewardship arms of our service including antimicrobial stewardship ward rounds and OHPAT (Outpatient Home Parenteral Therapy) as well as contribute to microbiology on call. The department, supported by a Foundation trainee, Specialist Nurses and Pharmacists, provides ward based clinical consultation, anti-microbial stewardship, diabetic foot, HIV, haematology, endocarditis and paediatric and C.difficile multidisciplinary ward rounds.
We provide a daily Critical Care ward round and outpatient clinics in General Infectious Diseases, Viral Hepatitis and OHPAT.
Slough is a high prevalence area for viral hepatitis, tuberculosis and HIV and there are opportunities to develop our work with these dedicated teams. The microbiology laboratory is part of Berkshire Surrey Pathology Services (BSPS), one of the country’s largest, most respected and welcoming NHS Pathology Networks.
It is the Hub laboratory for Berkshire serving Heathwood and Wexham Park Hospitals and Royal Berkshire Hospital. BSPS is NHS managed, and driven to deliver the best quality care for our NHS patients. A second Hub lab at Frimley Park Hospital serves Frimley Park Hospital, Ashford and St Peters Hospitals, and Royal Surrey County Hospital. Microbiologists and Infection doctors at all 5 sites work collectively with respect to the laboratories as well as in local Continuous Professional Development activities. The cross site hub virology laboratory is based in St Peters Hospital, Chertsey. BSPS in addition runs a COVID lighthouse laboratory processing 3500 samples per day.
