The Position

We are seeking a full-time Locum Consultant Radiologist for a fixed term of 12 months with an interest in Thoracic/Cardiothoracic Imaging at the Trust to support the ongoing expansion of radiology services. This will support the applicants attainment of CESR as part of the Thoracic Radiology Team, the applicant will be eligible to apply for a substantive post at the end of this period.

The successful applicant will be an enthusiastic, motivated individual who is able to work successfully and flexibly in a team as well as develop new services and skills. They will be expected to collaborate with the thoracic and body radiologists across both sites to maintain and enhance a comprehensive emergency and elective thoracic imaging service, support the growth of the thoracic radiology service and facilitate the development of a comprehensive thoracic service for local and regional patients. The appointee will also be part of a wider team of 52 consultant radiologists providing sub-specialty and general radiological services across the Trust. The post will have a commitment to support a range of diagnostic services such as CT, MRI, plain film reporting and ultrasound examinations with body interventions such as lung and liver biopsies, aspirations and drainages.

There is currently a 1:10 diagnostic on call rota and separate interventional body radiology (1:8). The candidate would be able to explore the on call that best suited their clinical skills.

Health Service

There are currently four WTE radiologists with a specialist interest in thoracic imaging who provide the primary input to the thoracic service: two Cardiothoracic Radiologists, one diagnostic Thoracic Radiologist with a sub-speciality Head & Neck interest and one Interventional Oncoradiologist primarily involved in lung cancer diagnosis and intervention.

The trust prides itself on a large lung cancer service, diagnosing and treating 600 new lung cancer cases per annum. It hosts a large tertiary cardiothoracic surgical unit and the regional PET centre. NUH was among the leaders nationwide delivering a completely radiology led day case ambulatory lung biopsy service, offering direct to home discharge from CT in over 95% of lung biopsies. NUH hosts the regional interstitial lung disease MDT, along with a newly built cystic fibrosis unit. The Trent Cardiac Centre is a modern, purpose built wing with state of the art facilities. We work in close collaboration with cardiologists in delivering the Cardiac MRI & cardiac CT service. Local innovation includes a Pulmonary Nodule service MDT, led by reporting radiographers, fully supported by the thoracic radiologists and Professor Baldwin at Nottingham City Hospital, who pioneered the BTS guidelines and pulmonary nodule risk calculator app. Rapid access to diagnostics has been implemented on a CXR to CT pathway, applauded nationally at BTOG as an example of best practise. Thoracic radiology also support a direct access GP CT chest service, with all primary reports issued by thoracics.

The trust has a modern radiotherapy unit, and offers the regional SABR service. This has largely taken over the pulmonary RFA work, but opportunities for collaborative RFA interventions still exist. In addition to the above ILD and nodule MDTs, we support a large number of specialist respiratory MDTs including two lung cancer MDTs a week, Lung Volume reduction surgery meeting, a haemotology fungal chest infection MDT and weekly clinicoradiological meetings for general respiratory and CCU.
