The Position

Full time (10 PA's including acute GI bleed on call) Consultant in Gastroenterology

The post holder will provide a high quality diagnostic and therapeutic upper and lower endoscopy service, a high quality outpatient service, including patient administration and manage gastroenterology and medical in-patients on the gastroenterology ward. On call commitment will be subject to negotiation with opportunity to take part in the General Medical on call if desired. The successful applicant will take part in an on call rota for GI bleeding, Out of hours, currently 1 in 8 weekends with time in lieu to ensure working time directive compliant. Candidates who wish to take part in the GIM medical rota will do so 1 in 15 with immediate senior review of all medical admissions in the acute area and post take ward rounds the following day as required. There is evening on call up until 10pm and weekend post take and ward cover shared amongst all acute and specialty physicians. There are 2 medical registrars on call at all times. The newly appointed consultants will have provision made for mentoring in the first year. The post holders will be supported by a GI secretarial Team, shared office space and will have access to shared PC with internet. There is a ward based system of care with specialty review throughout the hospital. There are approximately 24 physicians with an active expansion underway to facilitate 7 day working.

Health Service

Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Endoscopy Clinical Business Unit

There are currently 7 Consultant Gastroenterologists in the hospital 4 substantive and 3 locum consultants. A10 is a 29 bedded ward caring for acute GI emergencies and Hepatology with additional general medical patients. There are specialist nurses in Hepatology and Inflammatory Bowel disease as well as a nutrition team providing support around the hospital. The Consultants in post have special interests in endoscopy, inflammatory bowel disease, nutrition support and liver disease. They share care for the inpatient load with 2 weeks in 8 cover on the gastroenterology ward as well as reviewing/ providing input for several outliers. The Trust participates in the delivery of the Bowel Cancer screening service. The medical firm works closely with the surgeons and there are weekly MDT meetings with other local hospitals to discuss upper GI malignancy and hepato-biliary work. The Gastroenterology team have a Macmillan Clinical Nurse specialist in upper GI cancer, 2 part time Inflammatory bowel disease nurses and a hepatology specialist nurse. The Hospital Nutrition team is run by the Consultant Chemical Pathologist, a specialist nurse, a dedicated dietician, pharmacist and the gastro registrar. They support patients at home on PEG feeding and TPN

Essential Criteria

Full Registration and license to practice with the GMC

MB ChB/MBBS or equivalent MRCP

CCT in Gastroenterology (or equivalent or within 6 months of receipt of CCT at time of interview) or on the Specialist Register

Extensive training and experience in general medicine and Gastroenterology, including diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy procedures

Ability to communicate with other members/ grades of staff, patients, families and General Practitioners.
