The Position

Fixed Term (12 Months) Emergency Medicine Senior Clinical Fellow with option of extension

Job Purpose The purpose of this post is twofold:

1. To increase the level of middle grade cover within the department.

2. To provide a supportive environment for the motivated candidate to gain middle grade experience and progress their Emergency Medicine career.

The successful candidate would be expected to support the trust’s corporate objectives, and to participate in, and be supportive of, the clinical governance structure within the Directorate of Medicine and Emergency Care.

Duties & Responsibilities

The ED has 24/7 middle grade clinical cover with two or more senior doctors present at all times. There is extended consultant cover from 08:00 – 23:00 weekdays, and flexibly 10:00-22:00Hrs weekends & bank holidays. Outside these hours, consultant cover is provided via an on-call system and consultants will attend the department if required.

Post holders in this grade will participate in the middle grade rota. Duties within the Emergency Department will cover the whole range of clinical responsibility for adults and children with emergency problems from minor injuries to major trauma, and minor illnesses through to the critically unwell. You will be expected to lead major cases in our resuscitation room. You will also be responsible for any patients you admit to our Emergency Observation (Short stay) Ward. We also run a weekday ED Review Clinic, your rota will include shifts covering this.

The post holder will be expected to prioritise and time-manage effectively according to the activity of the department. Out of hours, the post holder will be one of the senior doctors present in the department and will be expected to lead the shift, working with the nurse-in-charge to ensure patient safety.

We would encourage the post holder to complete workplace based assessments to allow documentation of their own development and mapping of competencies achieved in line with RCEM curriculum.

Education is an important part of the role. The successful applicant will be expected to receive and deliver teaching. The post holder will receive consultant supervision and have a named consultant supervisor, and may be involved in supporting the training of other staff: medical; nursing; para-medical at undergraduate and postgraduate level.

Rota

The current Middle Grade doctors work a full shift pattern rota providing 24hour senior doctor cover. The current rota pattern is an 18 week rolling full shift pattern, designed to be compliant with regulations as set by NHS England and the European Working Time directive. The rota includes allocated SPA time as per the RCEM recommendations. The current rota is shown below.

The Location

East Midlands, England

The county is part of a designated growth area, which will see significant development and growth over the next 25 years. The population of the county is predicted to increase from its current level of 700,000 by more than 100,000 in the next six years. Whilst there is presently a relatively young population, including people from many different ethnic backgrounds and cultural beliefs, there are also a rapidly rising number of people aged over 75. The county has a varied and reasonably priced selection of accommodation, set in rural and urban surroundings, to rent or to buy. There are a number of well-regarded state and private schools available and an excellent range of adult education facilities. Northampton hosts a new university, which offers a comprehensive range of part and full time courses covering applied sciences, health, education, business and the arts.

Essential Criteria

• MB ChB or equivalent

• Full GMC registration with a licence to practice

• ALS / ACLS provider (course must include a face to face element)

• ATLS

• APLS or EPLS Provider

• At least 4 years post-registration experience.

• At least 2 years full time Emergency Medicine.

• Good basic and wide-ranging knowledge of clinical medicine

• Computer literate.

• Competent in the various clinical procedures required in ED practice equivalent to ACCS trained doctors.

• Good record keeper.

• Clinical leadership skills

• Able to work within and lead a team.

• Demonstrates excellent communication skills

• Competent in medical English (e.g. IELTS 7.5 or above, or Medical Degree in English).

• Demonstrates flexibility and adaptability

• Experience of managing a department and others.

The Package

Basic salary £48,075

Total additional rostered hours 01:45 / £2,103.28

Weekend allowance 7.5% /(1:3.60) £3,605.63 Night premium (with allowance for leave) 16:45 / £7,448.62

Total salary £61,232.53
