Health Service

The Emergency Departments is a mixed adult/paediatric ED and has annual attendance figure of 39,000 new presentations. Its unique geographical location close to the mountains of the Lake District offers a vast variety of caseload. The Emergency Department  is also a mixed adult/paediatric ED and currently sees in excess of 44,000 attendances per year.

Presentations across the spectrum of illness and injury are seen. We are proud to have a true traditional case mix of patients. The Infirmary is a fully accredited Trauma Unit within the Northern Trauma Network. North Cumbria is linked to the Northern Trauma Network which feeds into the RVI in Newcastle as our MTC. As a Trust we deal with the majority of patients with our specialities including Ophthalmology, Maxillofacial, ENT, Orthopaedics, General Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Paediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Urology, Intensive Care and the Medical Specialities.

The Emergency Departments have embraced the new clinical performance indicators from the Government and Royal College of Emergency Medicine. Both Emergency Departments have a three bed bay resuscitation room. There are monitored bays for “major” cases, with cubicle areas for more minor injuries and separate ENT/eye facilities. Twenty per cent of attendees are children. They are seen in an audio-visually separate paediatric waiting and treatment areas. This is supported by paediatric specialist nurses. Twenty four hour CT scanning is available, with image linking facility to tertiary centres for specialist referrals. The Trust is committed to developing a modern, innovative Emergency service, delivering sustainable, high quality, streamlined and integrated emergency care for the people of North Cumbria.

A planned phase of service redesign, development and expansion is agreed and underway. We work closely with our colleagues in allied specialities to deliver ambulatory care and same day emergency care initiatives.
