The Position
Working as part of a 24hr middle tier rota, the post holder will be expected to independently assess and manage Emergency Department presentations (in adults and children) of both minor and major illness and injury – supervised by the duty Consultant – while providing support to the junior workforce of FY2s, GP trainees, Clinical Fellows, trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioners and Physician Associates.
The post holder would have the opportunity to take an active role in teaching and review clinics. Previous experience in Emergency Medicine is essential. The post holder would also have allocated SPA time to allow for CPD and appraisal preparation. They would also be expected to be involved in audit and quality improvement within the Emergency Department.
The default job plan will include 8.5 sessions DCC and 1.5 sessions SPA. We recognise that applicants may have different career aims and we hope to assist personal and professional development in any way we can. There will opportunities for supported special interest (such as Pre-Hospital Care, Expedition Medicine, Mountain Medicine and Simulation). We will also support attainment of Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) in Emergency Medicine, through any required secondments in allied specialities (such as Acute Medicine, Intensive Care Medicine, Anaesthetics or Paediatrics). There will also be some rotation out of the base site to the opposite Trust hospital.
Health Service
The Emergency Departments is a mixed adult/paediatric ED and has annual attendance figure of 39,000 new presentations. Its unique geographical location close to the mountains of the Lake District offers a vast variety of caseload. The Emergency Department is also a mixed adult/paediatric ED and currently sees in excess of 44,000 attendances per year.
Presentations across the spectrum of illness and injury are seen. We are proud to have a true traditional case mix of patients. The Infirmary is a fully accredited Trauma Unit within the Northern Trauma Network. North Cumbria is linked to the Northern Trauma Network which feeds into the RVI in Newcastle as our MTC. As a Trust we deal with the majority of patients with our specialities including Ophthalmology, Maxillofacial, ENT, Orthopaedics, General Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Paediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Urology, Intensive Care and the Medical Specialities.
The Emergency Departments have embraced the new clinical performance indicators from the Government and Royal College of Emergency Medicine. Both Emergency Departments have a three bed bay resuscitation room. There are monitored bays for “major” cases, with cubicle areas for more minor injuries and separate ENT/eye facilities. Twenty per cent of attendees are children. They are seen in an audio-visually separate paediatric waiting and treatment areas. This is supported by paediatric specialist nurses. Twenty four hour CT scanning is available, with image linking facility to tertiary centres for specialist referrals. The Trust is committed to developing a modern, innovative Emergency service, delivering sustainable, high quality, streamlined and integrated emergency care for the people of North Cumbria.
A planned phase of service redesign, development and expansion is agreed and underway. We work closely with our colleagues in allied specialities to deliver ambulatory care and same day emergency care initiatives. There are opportunities to undertake quality and service improvement projects and successful applicants will have an important role in developing an integrated approach to patient care. ALS and ATLS courses are run within the Trust, supported by the Emergency Department Consultants.

Essential Criteria
• MBBS or equivalent primary medical qualification
• Full GMC registration with a license to practice
• Clinical experience and competence in Emergency Medicine to middle grade level. (At least 3 years post-full registration experience, with at least 2 years in Emergency Medicine or equivalent)
• Evidence of attainment of the necessary skills and experience to carry out the duties outlined in the job description
• Provider status in ALS, APLS and ATLS/ETC (or recognised equivalent courses) [may be attained while in post]

£41,158 - £76,751 per annum
Skilled Worker (Tier 2) Visa Certificate of Sponsorship
Support for Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Register (CESR) All locum appointments will be supported by the Trust, both with time and finances to aid attaining CESR should this be of interest.
