The Position
12 Month fixed term full time (10 PA's + on call) Consultant in Upper GI & General Surgery
The rota is currently 1:6 and this will change to 1:7 upon appointment. We have recently changed our on call arrangements in line with recommendations from the Getting It Right First Time Review.
We seek to appoint a fixed term Consultant Upper GI Surgeon with subspecialisation in benign disease. This is an opportunity for a motivated individual to develop a modern acute biliary service. We require an experienced Consultant Upper GI and General Surgeon. The post holder would be expected to make a significant contribution to the biliary workload. The post holder should be proficient in cholecystectomy, common bile duct exploration, Nissen fundopolication, Heller’s cardiomyotomy and resection of benign gastric lesions.

Essential Criteria
Full registration with General Medical Council and Licensed to Practice
MBChB or equivalent
A higher qualification such as FRCS.
Entry on the GMC specialist register via CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of the date of interview), CESR or European Community Rights
Wide training and experience in general surgery
Training and experience in laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair
Training and experience in laparoscopic cholecystectomy
Ability to deal with elective and emergency general surgical conditions
Proven experience in audit.
Understanding of NHS management responsibilities of consultant.
IT and computing skills
Evidence of participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
Ability to communicate and liaise effectively with patients, their relatives and with colleagues in all disciplines.
Ability to manage and motivate staff
Ability to lead the developments of services and promote best practice amongst colleagues
