The Position

Full time (10 PA's) Consultant in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care

The Anaesthetics and Intensive Care Service provides anaesthetic services for all the major specialties (excluding neuro and cardiac surgery). There are six main operating theatres with a ten bedded recovery room. The Department also provides a consultant-led hospital pain service. The Maternity Unit has a dedicated obstetric theatre and an obstetric epidural service is also provided. Maternal requests for epidural analgesia are granted whenever possible.

The post is principally based in the Intensive Care Unit. A six bedded unit (2 level 3, 4 level 2). There is access to Hamilton C6 ventilators and Phillips monitoring. Two CVVHDF machines are available with access to a renal dialysis unit. The expected work pattern is 1:4 weeks of ICU, Monday to Friday 0800 to 1800 with on-call in the other weeks. A small number of theatre sessions and on call complete the PA allocation. On-call is currently transitioning to a combination of resident and non-resident duties to support flexibility in working.

Health Service

There are fourteen consultant anaesthetists and two staff grade doctors working in the department. Four of the consultant anaesthetists are FFICM, one consultant has the Fellowship of the Faculty of Pain Medicine and leads the Pain Management Service.

A number of our consultants hold significant leadership roles across the hospital, such as the Director of Medical Education, Foundation Programme Director and Clinical Lead for Aeromedical Transport. Additional SPAs are allocated to reflect the significant volume of work that accompanies these roles.

Essential Criteria

GMC registered

MBBS or equivalent

FRCA or equivalent

On the GMC Specialist Register via:- CCT in Anaesthesia (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview), or  CESR or, European Community Right.

Evidence of an extended period of ICU training or relevant experience.

Current ALS Certificate

The Package

£83,270 to £144,486 per annum

Interview expenses and a relocation package of up to £7,000 based on receipts is available for this role. Housing assistance is also available where the Department will pay the difference between your current mortgage/rent bill, and that of your new accommodation on the Isle of Man, up to a maximum of £250 per month.
