The Position
Full time (10 PA's) Specialty Doctor- Older Adult Psychiatry
The clinical component of the post is focussed on the care of the patients referred to the Integrated Community Mental Health Team and Memory Assessment Services
This post will provide support to the Integrated Community Mental Health Team (4 sessions) and the Memory Assessment Service (4 sessions). The requirement is for both direct care and advice/consultancy to other members of the team.
Clinical input to the Memory Assessment Service will include memory assessments (3 new patients per session) as well as providing clinical supervision to the team. The role will involve assessment and diagnosis of patients referred for cognitive impairment. The follow-up assessments are being done in titration and monitoring clinics run by Nurse Practitioners/support staff.
For the Community Mental Health Team the post holder shall provide clinical input and support to the Consultants within the team, including providing supervision to the team and doing domiciliary visits including care home visits. The post holder will collaborate with community team members to ensure an emergency response is available as necessary during normal working hours to services for the locality.
The post holder will be expected to undertake assessment and management of patients under The Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act. In order to carry out these duties maintenance of Section 12 approval is desirable and Deprivation of Liberty Mental Health Assessor approval status will also be preferred.
The post holder may be required to participate in the out-of-hours middle tier rota subject to job planning. The on-call covers both General and Older Adult disciplines
Specialty Doctors will be asked with other colleagues to provide emergency cover in case of sudden or short-term sickness or emergencies. This is not a reciprocal arrangement and it is aimed to provide continuity of care across the organization .Any long-term sickness will normally be covered by separate arrangements as per the Trust policy.
Health Service
The hospital was designed with extensive input from service users and clinicians and is based on good practice guidance and 'safety by design' to ensure that it can provide high quality care. The ethos of the unit is to provide therapeutic care which is empowering, person centered and needs led and focuses on promoting recovery and independence. The in-patient units in the Harbour consist of: 4 x 18 bedded adult functional wards (2 male & 2 female 2 x 18 bedded advanced care wards (1 male & 1 female) 2 x 15 bedded dementia wards (1 male & 1 female) 2 x 8 bedded psychiatric intensive care unit (PICU) (1 male & 1 female) The Harbour is 22 miles from base.

Travel through the locality is facilitated by the motorway network with the M6, M61, M65, M55 and M58 all being partly located within the locality. The district is within easy reach of the Universities of Manchester, Liverpool, Preston and Lancaster and is well served with motorways and easy train journeys to London, Bristol, Manchester and Scotland. The Lancashire Coast, Lake District and Yorkshire Dales are all readily accessible within an hour. The international airport at Manchester is about 45 minutes away by car or 90 minutes by train.
Essential Criteria
MBBS or equivalent
MRCPsych or equivalent approved by the Royal College of Psychiatrists Qualification or higher degree in psychiatry or related subject, Trained as Deprivation of Liberty Mental Health Assessor
Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment
Experience of working in older adult psychiatry
Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
Able to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams
Willingness to work closely and effectively across all agencies
Commitment to continuous professional development
Up-to-date knowledge of mental health issues and developments, particularly in relation to policies affecting older adults
