The Position
Full time (10 PA's) extra DCC sessions negotiable.
To work as a consultant in Intensive Care Medicine, working with consultant colleagues in a ‘block working pattern’ to provide a high quality critical care service for patients. The post will have a significant interest in an allied specialty e.g. Anaesthesia, Emergency Medicine, Acute Medicine, or Respiratory Medicine
The direct clinical care sessions will be delivered on an annualised sessional contract. Consultants work in intensive care in 2-4 day blocks covering one of the two units from 8am until 6pm. The on call consultant starts at 5:30pm and is on call until 8am. Each unit has trainees from both tiers working until 6-8pm. Overnight, a trainee from both tiers is resident, providing cover to the unit and referrals from the ward,theatres and the emergency department.Jobs plans will be formally reviewed within the first 6 months after appointment and agreed according to evidence from actual activity. All consultants will be allocated 1.5 core SPA per week for professional development (CPD). Job Planning, Appraisal, Mandatory Training, attendance at regular team meetings which will have a clinical governance aspect and participating in Audit. Core SPA time will generally be undertaken within the Trust. Any variation from this principle must be discussed, agreed and made clear within the Consultant Job Plan.Additional SPA time will be made available to Consultants on the basis of evidenced need. Such allocation will be agreed and subsequently reviewed by the Consultant and their Head of Department during the Job Plan review session. Additional (non-core) SPA time will be undertaken within the Trust or at other agreed NHS sites or academic institutions during the normal working day.

This is a substantive post for a Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine with an interest in an allied specialty and is to fill a job vacancy. Sixteen critical care beds are currently provided within a footprint of two adjacent areas each comprising eight beds. This is made up of 10 Level 3 beds and six Level 2 beds. There are currently eight intensive care consultants. The department is well supported with trainee doctors and clinicalfellows.The senior resident tier is made up of ICM trainees and anaesthesia trainees; the junior tier is made up of a mixture of clinical fellows, ACCPs and internal medicine trainees.There has never been a more exciting time to join the Trust. As part of the Emergency Village and Critical Care development, work on the new Critical Care facility is dueto start in April 2021 which will see a new purpose built Critical Care Unit, a combined ICU and HDU, which will include rehabilitation areas and state of the art equipment. The new spacious patient rooms will also be more appropriate for the critical care environment.This is a golden opportunity to help shape and implement the delivery of critical care to set the standard for bespoke facilities and patient care across the North West.
