The Position
Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine and Anaesthetics or Emergency Medicine or Acute Medicine
The Critical Care Unit:
The critical care unit is amongst the longest established critical care units in the UK. The clinical team is led by a multidisciplinary consultant body comprising of five consultants in Critical Care and Anaesthesia and a consultant in Critical Care and consultant Physician. There are 8 level 3 beds and 6 level 2 beds with the flexibility to increase the number of level 3 beds (up to 11). A medical and nurse consultant-led critical care outreach and medical emergency team (MET) is well established. There is a regular rehabilitation service and follow-up clinic for patients who have been discharged from critical care. Trainees are drawn from a wide variety of backgrounds including Critical care medicine, internal medicine, emergency medicine and anaesthesia. Consultants in Clinical Biochemistry, Plastics and Burns, Microbiology and Radiology join the multidisciplinary (MDT) meeting once a week and there is an excellent working relationship with all other specialty consultants. The critical care supports the Medical Emergency Response Team (MET), which has been running successfully since January 2012. It is medically led by one of the critical care consultants. The vast majority of admissions (approximately 800/year) are emergency cases. There is a wide range of general medical, surgical, urological, ENT and orthopaedic/trauma cases.
Health Service
A £338 million (PFI) investment has re-built and modernised both Hospital sites, resulting in modern state of the art health care facilities for the treatment and care of patients. Hospital A was completed in 2008 and Hospital B in 2010. The hospitals include 887 inpatient beds with state of the art CT and MRI facilities existing on both hospital sites. CT and MRI scanners at Site A have also recently been upgraded including installation of a high field 3 Tesla MRI scanner. The DEXA scanner is also located at Site A. The Trust provides a full range of acute inpatient, outpatient, day case and emergency services to local communities of Merseyside. The Regional Plastic Surgery and Burns Unit also extends its services to the whole of Cheshire, Merseyside, North Wales and the Isle of Man. Which includes the great city of Liverpool, is within easy reach of North Wales, the Lake District and the Peak District and provides an interesting mix of rural and urban life. High quality schools are available in Liverpool, Wirral and Rainhill areas. The area has many sports facilities including championship golf courses, several sailing clubs and one of the finest windsurfing venues in Britain. ‘Merseysiders’ are renowned for their friendliness and quick-witted humour and the region sports two of the finest football teams in the Premier League.
Essential Criteria
Applicants must be eligible for full registration with the GMC at the time of appointment.
Applicants must have an entry on the GMC Specialist Register via one of the following:
1. Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT). (The proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of the interview).
2. Certificate of Eligibility of Specialist Registration (CESR). (CESR candidates must have written GMC confirmation upon successful application).
Applicants are required to hold Membership of appropriate Faculty or College and to be fully registered with the General Medical Council.
