The Position
Southport & Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust is looking to recruit an enthusiastic Consultant in Emergency Medicine to join their team. This is a full time post for 10-14 Pas depending on job planning.
The post holder will:
- Support the delivery of care of patients attending the A&E departments.
- Participate in the teaching and supervision of the work and duties of the junior doctors in training
- Assist in the compilation, checking and analysis of data for medical audit
- Undertake, exceptionally, to perform additional duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.
- Be available for such irregular commitments outside normally rostered duties as are essential for continuity of patient care.
- Participate in the on-call rota for the Adult and Paediatric Emergency Departments (currently 1:5 but is due to move to 1:6).

Acute care is provided at Southport and Formby District General Hospital and Ormskirk and District General Hospital. This includes adults’ and children’s accident and emergency services, intensive care and a range of medical and surgical specialities. Women’s and children’s services, including maternity, are provided at Ormskirk hospital.
Southport hospital is one of two modern hospitals within the trust and provides acute services to adult patients. The emergency department sees approximately 55,000 patients a year. The emergency department has benefitted from a full refurbishment and now offers a state of the art resuscitation room, bespoke mental health and relative’s facility and a modern Observation Ward/CDU.
The ED team are young determined, motivated and forward thinking. Over recent years the team have led on the introduction of ambulatory emergency care in the trust and also in frailty pathways, particularly admission avoidance. We have presented our work in these areas nationally.
The Location
Southport is a large seaside town in Merseyside, England. The town is 16.7 miles (26.9 km) north of Liverpool and 14.8 miles (23.8 km) southwest of Preston.
With Southport being a seaside town, it is great for family fun. There are plenty of attractions to get involved with including water sports, water parks, nature walks, the list goes on!
Essential Criteria
Qualifications/Higher Qualifications
- Basic Medical Qualification
- M.R.C.PP. or equivalent
- On the Specialist Register with a CCT in Emergency Medicine or within 6 months of achieving this.
Knowledge
- Knowledge and experience of Emergency Medicine
Training Expected
- Extensive training and experience in Emergency Medicine
Management/Audit
- Participation in Clinical Audit
Teaching Experience
- Experience of Teaching/Educational supervision
Academic Achievements/Research/Publications
- Acknowledgement of evidence-based practice
- Research experience

The Package
The trust are offering between 10PA-14PA contract depending on the job plan agreed. The salary bracket for this position is £77,913-£105,042 PA + on-call benefits.
