The Position
Roles and Responsibilities
- Support the Development of Stroke Services.
- Community services.
- Medical and/or specialty outpatient clinics (2 per week).
- Medical education.
- To provide, to a high standard, the full range of specialist diagnosis, treatment and care to patients requiring General Medicine services, as outlined in the proposed programme.
- To organise, manage and be responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of patients in the Hospital for the General Medicine Service.
- The stroke team is currently part of the Elderly care team and the both are fully integrated with General Internal Medicine.
- Except in emergencies or where otherwise agreed with your manager, you are responsible for fulfilling the duties and responsibilities and undertaking the Programmed Activities set out in your Job Plan, as reviewed from time to time.
- You are responsible for the associated duties set out in of the Terms and Conditions.
- The purpose of including agreed personal objectives in your Job Plan is to set out in clear and transparent terms what you and your clinical manager have agreed should reasonably be achieved in the year in question. These objectives are not contractually binding in themselves, but you have a duty to make all reasonable efforts to achieve them.
- You are not required to provide emergency cover. We may in exceptional circumstances ask you to return to site for emergencies if we are able to contact you.
- You are not, however, required to be available for such eventualities. Where emergency recalls of this kind become frequent, we will review the need to introduce an on-call rota.
- To provide, with Consultant colleagues (as appropriate) a service in the specialty to the hospitals so designated with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness.
- Locums are not normally employed to cover the absence of Consultants who are away on leave. The number of Consultants who are away on leave at any one time will be agreed with the Trust specialty policy. During the absence of colleagues on leave, Consultants are expected to provide agreed levels of cover.
- Where you wish to seek agreement to have External Duties included in your Job Plan, you must notify your clinical manager in advance. Scheduling of such duties will be by agreement between you and your clinical manager.
- You may be required to travel between sites.
- Where emergency work takes place at regular and predictable times, your clinical manager will seek to schedule it as part of the Programmed Activities in your Job Plan schedule. You may, however, be required to participate in an on-call rota to respond to less predictable emergencies.
- The Trust will provide secretarial support and an adequately equipped office, including IT facilities.
Job Plan
This post entails 11 programmed activities (PAs) per week in total.
DCC: 9.5 PAs
SPA:1.5 PAs
On call commitment: 3%, Category A, 1 in 13 weekdays, 1 in 16 weekends.
The Location
Essential Criteria
Education, Qualifications and Training
MBBS and MRCP or equivalent
Full GMC Registration with a licence to practise.
Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via:
• CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of the interview date).
• CESR.
• European Community Rights.
Experience
Depth and breadth of clinical experience in General Medicine.
Experience in a special interest that will complement those existing in the department.
Skills abilities and knowledge
Willingness and ability to fulfil the key elements of the job description.
Ability to cope with the demands of a DGH based Consultant.
Ability to lead and develop the service.
Ability to develop effective working relationships on an individual, multiprofessional and team basis with all levels.
Ability to communicate effectively.
Understanding of clinical governance and the individual responsibilities it implies.
Management
Knowledge of the NHS plan/modernisation agenda and the implications for service.
Personal qualities
Able to establish good working relationships with other members of the multidisciplinary team.
Flexible and adaptable to competing demands.
Commitment to modern practices.

Driving licence or ability to travel between sites.
