The Position
This position is for a Consultant in Medical Oncology, to be based within the Cancer services department. The post is advertised as a 7.5PA allocation, applications from those considering full time or job share opportunities would also be welcomed.
Example Rota:
Monday - Non-working day
Tuesday AM - MDT and Clinic. PM - MDT and Clinic.
Wednesday AM - SPA. PM - Admin.
Thursday AM - Clinic. PM - SPA.
Friday AM - Clinic. PM - Clinic.
Roles and Responsibilities
- To provide site specific oncological support to the multi-disciplinary team, along with one other site (to be agreed in discussion with appointee).
- To work collaborative with colleagues across the county and wider Cancer Network in order to deliver an equitable and high quality service to all patients
- To provide, to a high standard, the full range of specialist diagnosis, treatment and care to patients requiring oncology services as outlined in the proposed program.
- Provide the Clinical Lead for Acute Oncology Service provide support to both the AOS / CUP nursing team and clinical team on wards on at least two sessions per week.
- To support the nursing team within the Douglas Macmillan Oncology Unit in order to provide a comprehensive outpatient (and outreach) chemotherapy service
- To develop the clinical trials portfolio across cancer services, working with the Research Unit within the organisation and as part of the research network.
- Maintain own professional competence and personal development.
- Be part of the Core Cancer Management Team, taking on specific duties as discussed and agreed, this may include such elements as Chemotherapy Lead.
Health Service
The unit has 9 treatment chairs which operate Monday to Friday with an additional outreach clinic running once a week from a community hospital.
Essential Criteria
Education, Qualifications and Training
MBBS and membership to professional body (e.g. MRCP, MRCS, MRCPCH) or equivalent
Full GMC registration with a licence to practice
Entry on the GMC specialist register via:
- CCT
- CESR
- European Community Rights
Experience
Depth and breadth of clinical experience in 2 or more tumor types
Experience in a special interest that will complement those existing in the department
Skills, abilities and knowledge
Willingness and ability to fulfil the key elements of the job description
Ability to cope with the demands of a DGH based Consultant
Ability to lead and develop the service
Ability to develop effective working relationships on an individual, multi-professional and team basis with all levels
Ability to communicate effectively
Understanding of clinical governance and the individual responsibilities it implies
Management
Knowledge of the NHS plan/modernisation agenda and the implications for service
Personal Qualities
Able to establish good working relationships with other members of the multidisciplinary team.
Flexible and adaptable to competing demands.
Commitment to modern practices.
The Package
The salary for this position will be between £77,913 and £105,042, dependent on previous experience. Evidence will need to be submitted to prove prior length of service.
